What is the basic study of trigonometry?

The Three Fundamental Ratios

Everything in basic trigonometry starts with the ratios in a right-angled triangle. For a given angle (θ, pronounced "theta"):

Sine sin(θ) Opposite Side / Hypotenuse The length of the side opposite the angle, divided by the longest side (hypotenuse).
Cosine cos(θ) Adjacent Side / Hypotenuse The length of the side next to the angle (but not the hypotenuse), divided by the hypotenuse.
Tangent tan(θ) Opposite Side / Adjacent Side The length of the opposite side divided by the adjacent side. It is also sin(θ)/cos(θ).

The Unit Circle

Extending trigonometric ratios beyond right triangles to any angle from 0° to 360° and beyond by defining them using a circle with a radius of 1.

Trigonometric Identities

Equations that are true for all angles. The most famous is the Pythagorean Identity: sin²(θ) + cos²(θ) = 1.

Graphs of Functions

Studying the waves or periodic patterns produced by y = sin(x), y = cos(x), and y = tan(x).
