Quasars vs. Aeons
Understanding the technical definitions and scale of these cosmological phenomena
Quasar Definition
A Quasar (short for "Quasi-Stellar Radio Source") is an extremely luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN), powered by a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy.
Key characteristics:
•Powered by accretion of matter onto a supermassive black hole •Extremely luminous - can outshine entire galaxies •Compact region only a few light-days to light-weeks across •Often exhibit high redshifts, indicating great distance •Most are located billions of light-years awayQuasars are among the most energetic objects in the universe, with luminosities ranging from 1039 to 1041 watts.
Aeon Definition
In Roger Penrose's Conformal Cyclic Cosmology (CCC), an Aeon refers to a complete universe epoch from its own Big Bang to its infinitely expanded future.
Key concepts:
•Each aeon is a separate, complete universe with its own spacetime •Transitions between aeons occur through conformal rescaling• •The end of one aeon (heat death) becomes the beginning of the next •Information may transfer between aeons via gravitational waves •Provides a potential solution to the low-entropy problem at the Big BangUnlike quasars, aeons are not objects but complete cosmological epochs.
Mass Comparison: Quasar vs. Aeon
These two concepts exist on fundamentally different scales and cannot be meaningfully compared by mass:
Feature | Quasar | Aeon |
---|---|---|
Nature | A single astrophysical object | An entire cosmological epoch |
Mass Scale | 106 - 1010 solar masses (black hole mass) | 1050 - 1060 solar masses (entire universe mass) |
Size Analogy | A massive tree in a forest | The entire forest and everything in it |
Temporal Scale | Millions to billions of years | Trillions of years (Big Bang to heat death) |
An aeon is incomprehensibly more massive than a quasar. A quasar is a tiny component within an aeon, and the mass of all quasars in an aeon would be a minuscule fraction of the aeon's total mass.
The relationship between these concepts is not of scale but of containment: quasars exist within aeons.
