Jyotish Perspective: Moon, Rahu & Ketu
Understanding the Role of Chandra in Vedic Astrology and Eclipses
The Moon (Chandra) in Jyotish
In Vedic astrology, the Moon holds a position of supreme importance, even more significant than in Western astrology.
Chandra's Significance
- Represents the mind, emotions, and consciousness
- Governs fertility, motherhood, and the public
- Rules the zodiac sign Cancer (Karka)
- Considered the queen of the celestial cabinet
Astrological Functions
The Moon's position in a birth chart determines:
- Emotional nature and mental stability
- Relationship with the mother
- Intuitive capabilities
- Popularity and public image
Rahu & Ketu: The Shadow Planets
In Jyotish, Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets but mathematical points with profound astrological significance.
Rahu (North Node)
Represents worldly desires, innovation, and disruption
Ketu (South Node)
Represents spirituality, release, and karmic patterns
The Eclipse Mechanism in Jyotish
From the Jyotish perspective:
- Rahu and Ketu are the astrological causes of eclipses
- They "swallow" the Sun and Moon during alignments
- This occurs when the Sun and Moon are conjunct or opposite the lunar nodes
- The Moon is still the celestial body being obscured
The Moon's Role During Eclipses
Astronomical Perspective
In Western astronomy:
- The Moon is the physical body that enters Earth's shadow
- Eclipses are predictable through celestial mechanics
- The Moon's orbit is inclined 5° to the ecliptic
- Eclipses occur only when the Moon is at its nodes
Jyotish Perspective
In Vedic astrology:
- The Moon is still the celestial body being obscured
- Rahu and Ketu provide the timing and astrological significance
- The Moon's condition during eclipses affects mental and emotional states
- Remedial measures are often Moon-related (silver, pearls, etc.)
Mythological Context
The story of the demon Swarbhanu explains the relationship: During the churning of the ocean, the demon disguised himself to drink the immortal nectar. The Sun and Moon alerted Vishnu, who severed the demon's head. The immortal head became Rahu and the body became Ketu, who forever seek revenge by "swallowing" the Sun and Moon.
This story metaphorically represents the lunar nodes' relationship with the luminaries.
The Moon's Position in the September 2025 Eclipse
For the upcoming lunar eclipse:
- The Moon will be in Aquarius (Kumbha Rashi)
- It will be in Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatra
- The Moon will be conjunct Rahu during the eclipse
- This combination amplifies the eclipse's impact on emotions and mental states
Reconciling the Two Perspectives
The apparent contradiction between Jyotish and astronomy regarding eclipses stems from different frameworks of understanding:
- Astronomy explains the physical mechanism (Earth's shadow falling on the Moon)
- Jyotish explains the timing and significance (through the Rahu-Ketu axis)
In both systems, the Moon is the celestial body being obscured. Jyotish uses the nodal points to determine when eclipses occur and what karmic significance they hold.
Thus, Chandra (Moon) remains central to the eclipse phenomenon in both systems—as the physical body being shadowed in astronomy, and as the significator of mind and emotions being affected by the Rahu-Ketu influence in Jyotish.
